Simulating an extreme over-the-horizon optical propagation event over Lake Michigan using a coupled mesoscale modeling and ray tracing framework

چکیده
Accurate simulation and forecasting of over-the-horizon propagation events are essential for various civilian and defense applications. We demonstrate the prowess of a newly proposed coupled mesoscale modeling and ray tracing framework in reproducing such an event. Wherever possible, routinely measured meteorological data from various platforms (e.g., radar and satellite) are utilized to corroborate the simulated results. © 2017 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) [DOI: 10.1117/1.OE.56.7.071505]

Velocity Modeling in a Vertical Transversely Isotropic Medium Using Zelt Method
In the present paper, the Zelt algorithm has been extended for ray tracing through an anisotropic model. In anisotropic media, the direction of the propagated energy generally differs from that of the plane-wave propagation. This makes velocity values to be varied in different directions. Therefore, velocity modeling in such media is completely different from that in an isotropic media. The vel...
متن کاملAcoustic Ray-Tracing on Unstructured Adaptive Grids
A computationally efficient acoustic ray-tracing code based on unstructured adaptive grids is described in detail. The use of unstructured grids allows wave propagation simulations on complex computational domains. Detailed surface layer physics is included to take into account the atmospheric variability under different stability conditions and landuse inhomogeneities. The ray-tracing model ha...

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation of Light Propagation in 2D Periodic and Quasi-Periodic Photonic Structures
Ultra-short pulse is a promising technology for achieving ultra-high data rate transmission which is required to follow the increased demand of data transport over an optical communication system. Therefore, the propagation of such type of pulses and the effects that it may suffer during its transmission through an optical waveguide has received a great deal of attention in the recent years. We...
متن کاملPICTURE OF THE MONTH Observation of Coexisting Mesoscale Lake-Effect Vortices over the Western Great Lakes
Mesoscale vortices are one of several types of wintertime lake-effect structures that are observed over the Great Lakes region as cold arctic air is rapidly modified from below by warm lake waters. These vortices are thought to occur less frequently than other lake-effect structures, such as wind-parallel snowbands (e.g., Kristovich 1993), which are responsible for greater than half of the year...
